Initial Assessment of the Minamata Convention in Latin America and the Caribbean Region (GEF/UNEP project)

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Basel Convention Coordinating Center-Stockholm Convention Regional Center for Latin America and the Caribbean – LATU (BCCC-SCRC) are the implementing and executing agency respectively.

The project aims to strengthen the capacity of the participating countries: Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Dominican Republic; to identify the sources of mercury and the priority actions to be taken, and thus contribute to the sustainable development of the participating countries through the reduction of the risk to human health and the environment from mercury emissions.

Participating countries

The regional launching workshop for both mercury projects took place at the Palladium Business Hotel on November 18, 19 and 20 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
